Evergreen Counseling offers guidance for couples in all different stages of relationship.

If you are reading this, you have probably been feeling like things in your relationship are “off”. We all have different ways of dealing with our feelings when things get hard in life or in the relationship. Often, the way we deal with this and how our partner deals with it are very different and most likely a great source of frustration! You may be feeling distant from your partner or like you can never get through a conversation without getting in a fight. Often these feelings can cause so much pain and you wonder if there is a way out.

In couples therapy, whatever situation brought you here…

you will work with your therapist to learn about the pattern that you and your partner get caught in when things get hard. After learning this, you will begin working on learning news ways to communicate and connect with your partner.

What is EFT - or Emotionally Focused Therapy - for Couples?

(EFT) is a type of short-term therapy with the goal of helping couples achieve a more secure emotional bond or attachment. This approach to couples therapy was developed by doctors Sue Johnson and Les Greenberg in the 1980s and it has its roots in attachment theory, which addresses how safe you felt to explore the world based on interactions with primary care takers. But in short, it focused less on worksheets and specific problem solving within the relationship, and more on your attachment and bond.

Taking the first step is huge…

The goal of Couples Counseling…

The goal of therapy is deeper than learning new communication skills. The hope is that each partner can peek beneath the surface of their reactions and learn more about what they are feeling. Couples therapy is a safe space to share what each partner is feeling and to learn more about how you impact one another. Often couples feel they are being heard for the first time and this is the foundation to begin changing your relationship.

Is Couples Counseling right for me?

Couples therapy is for anyone looking to improve their relationship in anyway with a loved one. Whether you are torn about saving the relationship or feel that some extra support would help, couples therapy can be beneficial.

What does couples therapy practically look like?

Initially, you are encouraged to come for 1 hour weekly sessions for the first 6-12 weeks. After that point, you and the therapist can assess the level of support you would like moving forward. Some couples continue with weekly while others may move to every other week or monthly.

Healthy relationships take effort and commitment. When life throws difficult situations your way, sometimes this can bring you closer to one another and other times, leave you both feeling alone and frustrated. Couples therapy can help you navigate the challenges that you are facing.

Often you find yourself overwhelmed by pain or numb and unsure of how you feel. This may cause you to feel disconnected from those you love and unsure of how to open up. Together we can take time to be gentle and compassionate as you share your story and current struggles.
